In The News: "Meet candidate … who IS this guy?"

“Meet candidate … who IS this guy?”
The Charlotte Observer – 1/14/2007

John Cox is the first Republican to declare himself a candidate for president in 2008, but that distinction isn’t helping get his name out to the national public.

Undaunted, the millionaire accountant/lawyer and longtime Republican activist from the Chicago area is making the rounds on the bottom rung of the S.C. political circuit this weekend, much like a candidate for secretary of state — only he’s getting less attention.

Cox speaks with all the confidence of a seasoned politician as he jokingly shrugs off the notion that he doesn’t have a snowman’s chance in you know where to occupy the Oval Office.

“Most Americans hadn’t heard of Barack Obama before six months ago,” he said of the senator from Illinois and potential Democratic presidential candidate.

Though he has run for several offices, including the U.S. Senate, Cox’s experience in political office ends at the county school board level — a fact he dismisses without a pause.

“John McCain’s never run a business, and neither has Rudy Giuliani,” he said.

As for his political platform, Cox said he’s a Reagan Republican. He voted for Bush, but he’s disappointed in his Iraq policy and believes the solution there is economic rather than military. He said he believes the road to recovery for Iraq is to put its oil fields back in action and get Iraqis back to work earning a living.

He can afford to run for president because he has made a lot of money as an accountant, lawyer and business owner.

He got in the race because he’s tired of career politicians. “The only thing they do well is beg for money and get on TV,” he said.

Yet another snarky, liberal reporter trashes a conservative. Perfect.

Don’t believe this dismissive little reporter. John Cox is a conservative worth considering, and his campaign is gaining strength across the nation.

I’ve never heard of the man until now. I hope he gets more air time so I can see how he presents himself and defends/argues his positions.
