In The News: "Romney advisor jumps on McCain’s prez bandwagon"

“Romney advisor jumps on McCain’s prez bandwagon”
Boston Herald – 1/20/2007

Sen. John McCain has tapped a longtime adviser to former Gov. Mitt Romney as his northeast strategist while Romney named another top Boston Republican operative to his presidential team.

Rob Gray, a key strategist in Romney’s successful 2002 gubernatorial race, was named McCain’s New England senior adviser yesterday. Romney responded by hiring entrenched GOP operative Charlie Manning to his public relations team.

“I had some of the other campaigns contact me, but it was a pretty easy decision for me to work for Mitt,” said Manning, who worked on Romney’s failed 1994 Senate bid and was a senior adviser in 2002. “He brings all the tools our country needs right now.”

Despite Gray’s close ties to Romney, Gray said the decision to sign with McCain should not be seen as a snub. “I like Mitt and I wish him well, but I think John McCain is the right candidate to carry our party to victory in November 2008,” Gray said. “I’m pro-McCain, not anti-Romney.”

McCain, who will square off with Romney in the 2008 GOP presidential primary, said in a statement: “Rob Gray has a proven track record of providing quality advice and counsel.”
