The silliness of Political Correctness

(Video linked at the bottom of the homepage.)

This is a few days old, but I thought it was worth posting just to highlight how silly political correctness can be sometimes. It all takes place down in Dallas County, Texas during a meeting of city officials. Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield was discussing the issue of unpaid traffic tickets when he stated:

Central Collections has become a black hole.

Now, as all of you know, a black hole is an extreme gravitational field (possibly formed by a collapsing star) that has such a pull that even light cannot escape. So in other words, things go into a black hole and are not seen again. This sounds like a decent example to use when describing the issue with Central Collections, according to Mayfield. However, one of his fellow Commissioners, John Wiley Price, took exception to that term by shouting “Excuse me!  Become a what?  Become a what?” repeatedly. His justification for his outrage:

So if it’s ‘angel food cake,’ it’s white. If it’s ‘devil’s food cake,’ it’s black. If you’re the ‘black sheep of the family,’ then you gotta be bad, you know. ‘White sheep,’ you’re okay. You know?

Yes, that’s right, the term “black hole” is racist, just as angel food cake, black sheep, and anything else that has the words white or black used in it.

Can someone please provide Mr. Price a copy of Steven Hawking’s book “The Big Bang and Black Holes” so he can understand where the origin of the term comes from and can stop making a fool of himself? Seriously, some people are so PC when it comes to racial sensitivity that they go far out of their way to discover racist comments where none exist.

Geez… that is, well, I don’t know what to say, and that is saying something for me. It is difficult to believe the video wasn’t doctored, or perhaps the guy worrying over black holes needs a doctor.

  2. It is very strange. I surfed through the related YouTube videos at some of the responses, and many people reacted the same way as you did. I should post the FOX News interview they did with Price about this, where he starts going off on the difference between Angel Food Cake and Devils Food Cake. He just keeps digging a hole for himself, especially with his gestures and tone. Talk about hypersensitivity!

I heard about this on Hannity a couple days ago. These guys are just getting so ridiculous about this whole PC and racial sensitivity stuff my head is about to explode. Pretty soon all the black crayons will be removed and we won’t be able to have blackboards in our classrooms. I guess dermatologists and cosmetologists won’t be able to clean your blackheads any more either. I guess when a city experiences a complete poweroutage we can’t call that a blackout either. this dude needs to find himself a black hole!

BTW – liking that banner up there! Maybe it will still be up there when you read this. I’ve been getting a few clicks from him each day!

  4. The black crayons was my first thought as well. I guess some people will find racism anywhere if they try hard enough. Part of me finds myself agreeing with Whoopi Goldberg with her comments yesterday abou the N-word, where non-blacks don’t understand where they are coming from when it comes to racism. However, I think the more we dwell in the past, the more likely we’ll never get over it and enter the future. Maybe it will take another generation to lose the old racism mindset.

Regarding the banner, there is one or two others sitting behind you in the que. Seems like you’re dominating them easily! I added a 5 cent square to your site last night. We’ll see how much traffic that one generates. I received a total of 7 from the small button. I also added that “SezWho” option that EntreCard was hyping last week. Not sure if that will increase traffic flow or not, but it’s worth a shot.

How have these politically correct people survived life in the real world as long as they have? This sensitivity BS has really got to stop.

I wrote a post on our ‘politically correct’ society a while back, which links political correctness to many problems in our country. People are being sheltered and catered-to way too much, and it’s leading to the deterioration of our society.

And now we can’t call chocolate cake “black” or “devil’s food”?

Next thing ya know, we’ll be renaming the White House. And I’m sure that the Pentagon’s shape must offend someone, somewhere. Maybe baseball players will want to restructure it because we shouldn’t link government to sports.

The world has gone mad, and there aren’t enough rubber rooms for the masses.

  6. WTH? I believe the esteemed councilman needs to peruse through wikipedia once in a while…
    For example: Peruse
Although considered an error by most usage experts, the word peruse is commonly understood to mean “to skim over” or “to glance at.” The accepted definition is “to examine closely.”

    Once again, that’s spelled B L A C K H O L E, not to be confused linguistically with black ho, or backhoe, or backhole…

  7. Comedy Plus says:

Scream racism really, really loudly and very often. Them two need to go back to college to figure out what a black hole is. Geez is right!

  8. Mikey,

I do agree that Political Correctness (aka hyper-sheltering) does make the population a bit soft. Periodic negative stimulii does make an individual a bit numb to things that might offend them as adults. T

    Steve,

I’m sure he finds “wiki” to be some sort of racial slur as well.

    Comedy,

Sadly enough, I do know someone like that. I’m not sure why they are like that. Must have something to do with up-bringing.
