Open Question: Can a woman be President/Vice President and still raise young children?

In what seems to be a strange twist in the political spectrum this week, the Democrats are upset that Sarah Palin didn’t turn down the Vice Presidency offer from John McCain so she could stay home and raise her children, especially her youngest that has Down Syndrome.  On the other hand, the Republicans are arguing that women are capable of working and raising children at the same time, and that thinking they cannot multi-task slaps of someone being sexist.

So, what do you have to say?  Can a woman be President/Vice President and still raise young children?

Here was my response to the question:

I’m a bit surprised no one has responded to this yet, so I’ll leave the first comment. I believe a woman can in fact be President/Vice President while raising young children, just as men have done in the past. With the support structure that exists with all the family members and handlers in the Washington, there is someone available in a national emergency to respond to the needs of the children while the President/Vice President’s attention is else where. The only time where I can see it being a liability is if the child is less than a year old and cannot sleep during the night, meaning the President/Vice President isn’t getting enough sleep. However, with the responsibilities of the position keeping them up at strange hours of the day or night to begin with, this wouldn’t necessarily be any different.
