Two weeks ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that, “We were not – I repeat – were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used.” This followed the release of documents by the Obama Administration regarding to CIA interrogation techniques authorized and used during the Bush Administration. There was a lot of confusion over who should be prosecuted over these “torture” techniques, stemming from the lawyers who made the legal case for the interrogations, Bush Administration who authorized it, CIA officials that practiced them, and/or the Congressional Intelligence Committees who had oversight of the CIA.
Pelosi continued, “It gives further impetus among members to have some kind of truth commission as to what happened. I do not think immunity should be granted to everyone in a blanket way.” Well, it seems that Madam Speaker might be reversing her position on denying immunity.
In what will be seen as a slap in the face, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was caught in a lie when the CIA released a 10-page memo showing that she was briefed about enhanced interrogations. According to the memos, Pelosi and Peter Goss were briefed about the practices in 2002, and specifically the treatment of Abu Zubaydah. If you remember, Zubaydah was the focus of discussion following the initial CIA memo release in April when he was waterboarded 83 times.
In response to the new memos, the Speaker’s office released the following statement: “As this document shows, the Speaker was briefed only once, in September 2002. The briefers described these techniques, said they were legal, but said that waterboarding had not yet been used.” If Pelosi lied two weeks ago about not being notified about enhanced interrogation methods being used, how are we to believe her now?
