“Presidential Roundup: New Hampshire Debates to Spring Forth, Ron Paul Mulls Bid”
New York Times – 1/13/2007
Nearly two decades after he was the Libertarian Party’s nominee for president, maverick Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul is weighing another White House bid — this time for the GOP nod in 2008.
Paul on Thursday filed paperwork with the Texas Secretary of State establishing a nonprofit corporation, the Ron Paul 2008 Presidential Exploratory Committee, which can accept funds Paul can use to “test the waters” for a full-fledged bid.
Should he decide to forge ahead with a campaign, Paul would file paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Paul intends to elaborate on his intentions in a couple of weeks, said Kent Snyder, who is chairing Paul’s exploratory effort.
Paul is well-known on Capitol Hill for his frequent lone “no” votes on many spending bills and other legislation, much of which wins overwhelming support among both Republicans and Democrats alike.

“George Pataki to be speaker at first Naples/Fort Myers Town Hall lecture”
Naples Daily News – 1/20/2007
George Pataki, former governor of New York, will be in Naples on Monday to speak about American leadership and how it relates to last November’s election and future public policy.
“If you take a look at the history of America, whenever we face very real challenges what has been most evident about our country has been the sense of unity and common purpose,” Pataki said Friday, speaking by phone from a New York City office. “… Now we are facing enormous challenges and when you look back to last November you didn’t see that. … I’m going to talk about that and how we can change that going forward.”
About 900 people are expected to attend the first Naples/Fort Myers Town Hall lecture at 6 p.m. at the Naples Grande Resort and Club, according to Rick Borman, vice president of media and public relations for the speaker series.
“We asked Pataki to speak because we were looking for a political leader who we thought made a difference,” Borman said. “He presided over 9/11 and did it so well that he really showed his mettle. …When you’re looking for somebody who really represents what’s good about American politics he comes to mind for us.”

“Romney advisor jumps on McCain’s prez bandwagon”
Boston Herald – 1/20/2007
Sen. John McCain has tapped a longtime adviser to former Gov. Mitt Romney as his northeast strategist while Romney named another top Boston Republican operative to his presidential team.
Rob Gray, a key strategist in Romney’s successful 2002 gubernatorial race, was named McCain’s New England senior adviser yesterday. Romney responded by hiring entrenched GOP operative Charlie Manning to his public relations team.
“I had some of the other campaigns contact me, but it was a pretty easy decision for me to work for Mitt,” said Manning, who worked on Romney’s failed 1994 Senate bid and was a senior adviser in 2002. “He brings all the tools our country needs right now.”

“Frank Keating Decides Against Run For President”
KOTV.com – 1/17/2007
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating said Tuesday he has decided not to launch a 2008 presidential bid, but didn’t rule out a possible return to elected office.
Keating, 62, said he seriously considered making a run for the Republican nomination in 2008, but determined he would be too far behind candidates like U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in organization and fundraising.
“First, the train is far down the track in terms of organization, and John McCain has done a brilliant job of doing that,” Keating said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters.
Keating added that Romney has the ability to “write an exceedingly large check to himself.”
