“On Iraq war vote, Democrats failed their liberal backers”
Des Moines Register – 5/30/2007

We cannot express in strong enough terms how dismayed we are by the decision of the Democrats to put forth a bill funding the Iraq war without any requirements for troop withdrawal.

Over 75 percent of the nation supports the quickest responsible departure from Iraq, and they would support a strong Democratic position of refusing to submit a bill without restrictions to the reckless and callous Bush administration.

Furthermore, liberals to whom we have spoken about this bill question how we are any better represented by our own party than the Republicans. We will not support Democrats in the next election if this is the type of representation we receive after voting for Democrats in this past election.

“How Fred Thompson’s Senate Record Stacks Up”
New York Times – 5/30/2007

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson — now an all-but-announced candidate for the Republican presidential nomination — amassed a decidedly but not exclusively conservative voting record during his eight-year Senate tenure (1994-2003).

Earlier this year, when Thompson made it clear he was contemplating a 2008 White House bid, CQPolitics.com published a chart and analysis of Thompson’s positions on key votes. The chart, which can be accessed here, compares Thompson’s votes with those of three GOP senators who served with Thompson and who are running for president or weighing a bid — Sam Brownback of Kansas and John McCain of Arizona, who are announced candidates, and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who is still considering a presidential bid, possibly as an independent.

The CQPolitics.com analysis found that Thompson and McCain voted the same way on 83 of 102 CQ-defined “key votes” (81.4 percent) during the eight years the two men served together. Thompson agreed with Brownback on 57 of 70 votes (81.4 percent) and with Hagel on 57 of 71 votes (80.3 percent).

“Actor-politician Fred Thompson moves ahead with likely presidential candidacy”
International Herald Tribune – 5/30/2007

WASHINGTON: Fred Thompson, the former U.S. senator and “Law & Order” actor, is taking significant steps toward an expected summer entry into the crowded Republican presidential race.

His likely candidacy could give restless conservatives somewhere to turn.

A crucial Republican bloc, those voters have not fully embraced the leading contenders, giving Thompson what his backers argue is an opening for a “true conservative” who can win in November 2008.

“Greens urge immigration reform based on human rights, not paranoia”
Green Party – 5/23/2007

WASHINGTON, DC — Green Party leaders called on Congress to replace its current ‘deal’ for comprehensive immigration reform, and instead enact legislation that will protect human rights, facilitate the path to citizenship, and help reverse the economic devastation that has uprooted people in Mexico and Central and South American countries.

“Both major parties are operating out of the same framework to implement a massive cheap labor management program for the benefit of major and minor US corporations under the guise of immigration reform. No matter how many times they repeat ‘comprehensive,’ it still will not make it fair, humane or rational for immigrant workers and families or for domestic workers,” said Nativo Lopez, National President of Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana and the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) < http://www.mapa.org/> and a member of the Green Party.

Greens across the US have supported and participated in several recent demonstrations for immigrants’ rights. Green leaders in California < http://gp.org/press/states/ca/ca_2007_05_04.shtml> protested the police brutality, including clubbings and shootings with nonlethal bullets, visited on protesters and members of the media at a peaceful immigrants’ rights march in Los Angeles on May 1.
