“On Iraq war vote, Democrats failed their liberal backers”
“On Iraq war vote, Democrats failed their liberal backers”
Des Moines Register – 5/30/2007
We cannot express in strong enough terms how dismayed we are by the decision of the Democrats to put forth a bill funding the Iraq war without any requirements for troop withdrawal.
Over 75 percent of the nation supports the quickest responsible departure from Iraq, and they would support a strong Democratic position of refusing to submit a bill without restrictions to the reckless and callous Bush administration.
Furthermore, liberals to whom we have spoken about this bill question how we are any better represented by our own party than the Republicans. We will not support Democrats in the next election if this is the type of representation we receive after voting for Democrats in this past election.
With this bill going forward as is, we can promise you that at least two of the left’s most loyal supporters will not support Democrats again.
In the next presidential election, we will vote for U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, who seems to be a man of his convictions, unlike the Democrats in whom we had placed so much faith.
