Considering the debates over the FISA courts over the past two years, with the Democrats leading the charge claiming that the Bush policies infringe on the Constitutional rights of US Citizens, I find it interesting that they are giving the Republicans some ammunition against them on the issue.  From CNS News:

House Republican leaders Tuesday criticized what they called an “11th hour decision” by Democrats to put off a hearing on updating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) until after Congress’ August recess, warning that “national security can’t be postponed.”

“Democrats have ignored, downplayed, and done everything possible to sidestep addressing the FISA problem,” said House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) in a news release. “Now, they have canceled a hearing with the director of national intelligence (DNI) rather than have him address the issue directly on Capitol Hill.”

Former Presidential candidate shares his thoughts on some of the GOP candidates for the 2008 election. 

On John McCain:

“My heart has always been with my good friend John McCain,” said Dole, former Senate majority leader and Republican presidential nominee. “But it’s just not happening, the buzz is gone.”

Thompson, an actor and former Tennessee senator, is somebody people would like to “have around the living room,” and that will help him pick up McCain’s supporters, Dole said.

“Field in G.O.P. Moves to Retool as Changes Fly”

WASHINGTON, July 18 — The decline of John McCain’s presidential campaign, and the rising profile of Fred D. Thompson as a prospective contender, are forcing candidates to rewrite their strategies as they adjust to a playing field vastly different from just one month ago.

Seeing an opening created by Mr. McCain’s problems, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York headed for Iowa on Wednesday, the start of a two-day trip that reflects the campaign’s confidence that he now has a shot to win in the state, after Mr. McCain cut his Iowa staff by half. And Mitt Romney of Massachusetts released a television advertisement Monday emphasizing faith and family values in what aides said was an effort to stir unease about Mr. Giuliani among conservative voters who have gravitated toward him.

But it is the impending entry of Mr. Thompson — the former Tennessee senator who, aides said Wednesday, plans to enter the race with a national announcement tour just after Labor Day — that has injected the most uncertainty into the contest. Across the board, Republicans said they were uncertain how strong a candidate Mr. Thompson might be in his first national campaign and how much money he could raise.
