Tyler Cowen reviews Charles Karelis’ Persistence of Poverty which describes why economic ideas from wealthier individuals and societies do not help the poor. The problem is not the amount of money or lack of effort.
The poor, due to their position, have different marginal preferences than the rest of us.
Poverty is not produced by lack of money.

According to a blog at WashingtonPost.com, Fred Thompson told supporters on a conference call today that he is indeed going to run for the republican nomination for President. He is planning to confirm this on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno next Wednesday night as his fellow candidates are finishing up another Fox News debate. He is said to be making a formal announcement (he’s REALLY dragging this out, isn’t he?) the following day.
Again, Thompson finally deciding to announce his formal candidacy is going to have the most powerful impact on Rudy Giuliani’s poll numbers. Romney’s support will be somewhat decreased, but many of Mitt’s supporters are more focused on image and “looking Presidential” which Thompson does not. John McCain’s campaign is already on life support and this latest entry will only make things worse. Huckabee seems to be gaining support in evangelical circles and that probably won’t change. Ron Paul probably will be the most unfazed by Thompson’s entry because Thompson is a war hawk, neo-conservative, that won’t take any of Dr. Paul’s anti-war, small government, hippie, yuppie vote.

In a case that will keep social conservatives railing against “activist judges”, Polk County Judge Robert Hanson handed down a ruling striking down Iowa’s ban on same-sex marriage, which allowed a few same-sex couples to get married in Des Moines.
Of course, the decision will be appealed, so the ban may be reinstated. It will be interesting to see what happens. Iowa is still a pretty anti-same-sex marriage state, with Chet Culver, our Democratic governor, issuing a statement that he is against same-sex marriage:

Thoughts: I don’t really know where to begin with this. Martin Frost makes such a one-sided approach to this article while leaving out so many facts that it is almost sad. Let me try to fill in the gaps:
1) Both of the dominating parties do their best to secure votes for themselves including gerrymandering (which is how he lost his job as a Congressman). To think that this is a Republican-only concept is deceitful.
2) The proposed change to the California electoral vote distribution isn’t a “unilateral disarmament” of the Democratic party, unless he believes that there is no possibility of the Democratic party to ever regain the White House without carrying all of California’s electoral votes. Clinton had more than enough EV’s to spare in both elections and Jimmy Carter won the election without carrying California (even though California had 10 fewer EV’s back in 1976). Mr. Frost must not have much faith in his party.

Well I completely screwed the pooch on staying up to date on the blog and with so much juicy fodder for comment. I mean sweet Jesus! Alberto-GONE! Rove-GONE! Craig-SELF HATING HOMOSEXUAL! The French-OFFERING HELP IN IRAQ! Bush-COMPARING IRAQ TO VIETNAM(and somehow making it in favor of staying)! So many more i can’t even begin to list. My proverbial cup runneth over!
Lets start with something fun. I used to work for John Edwards (yes the Presidential candidate). I have had personal interactions with him both in public settings and behind closed doors. I am going to start by saying this much-THE MAN IS A COLOSSAL ASS! He is about as pampered and two-faced as anyone in the media has painted him. I actually think several of his points are quite noteworthy, but he is a hypocrite. As you may have seen he lives in a 28,000 square foot mansion in Chapel Hil, NC. It so happens that it is approximately 2 miles from my parents house and whenever i go to visit i am forced to drive by it. He also preaches about not driving SUVs and conserving energy, unfortunately he does neither himself.
