Behind the wheel results!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who participated in our survey.  The only way to have fun while seeing if there was any “truth” behind the U.S. News and World Report survey was with your responses.  As you can see, with our 22 responses, our sample size seems too small to adequately compare our results to that from the other survey which we are referencing.  After all, it’s hard to believe that Democrats only drive trucks and SUVs.

Type of car Likely vote % of Republicans % of Independents % of Democrats
Sedan/Coupe Independents 40% 67% 0%
Hatchback Republicans 10% 0% 0%
Sports Car Republicans 10% 0% 0%
SUV Democrats 20% 17% 83%
Minivan Republicans 10% 0% 0%
Pickup Truck Toss-up 10% 0% 17%
Other types Independents 0% 17% 0%

No, neither our survey or the one from U.S. News and World Reports were sceintific, and I think some of you stated it very well how it would be next to impossible to use such an observation to make a reasonable assumption about the drivers political leaning.  As Timothy W Price mentioned in the comments, “I think that what you drive reflects more on your personality than what party you belong to.”  When I purchased my car, it was a matter of economics and practicality.  I needed to make sure the car could carry a wheel chair and was easy for an elderly individual to climb in and out of easily.  How does one quantify such a variable into a survey?

Obviously it cannot be done without making the survey so complex that the numbers become meaningless to the readers.  The same holds true with many other polls and surveys you will see floated around in the media this election cycle.  So before taking polls at face value, I recommend taking the time to read the questions within the poll and what other questions that were answered but not reported.  You might be surprised at what you discover.

So once again, thank you for your participation.  I recommend you take a moment to visit the web sites of those who participated in the survey.  Like with polls, you might be surprised at what you find on their web sites if you take a few extra minutes to look deeper.  I hope you enjoyed this exercise as much as I did.

  1. That was a quick survey…well done, and I agree there is probably so little of a correlation between affiliation and car preference that it just doesn’t matter.

But just for the record, did you list me as an Independent on that survey? ;)

  2. Yes, I did. “Anarchist” didn’t quite fit the bill of Republican or Democrat. :)

  3. Very interesting concept for a poll. I have seen some nationally publicized surveys with a little as 100 respondents. I’d love to see how more people answer.
