What was the most important news item of the day?

What was the most important news item of the day? Was it the good news in international security that 15 hostages were freed today in Columbia after years of captivity? Was it the bad news in the economy that the stock market officially entered a “bear market” today following another triple-digit loss on the Dow? Well, if you were following the CNN Political Ticker today, it wasn’t either. Nope, the most important news today was the Obama “fist bump.” Ok, well maybe it wasn’t the “most important” news item on the site, but it did warrant two separate entries by the media team. Makes you wonder if the writers were already on their holiday weekend leave. Just so you don’t think I’m kidding, check out the two separate entries below:

Obama over fist bumping? (Posted at 7:19am)

According to Tuesday’s press pool report, the Illinois senator refused to bump fists with a boy as he was touring the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio.

As the boy outstretched his first, Obama said no and added, “If I start that …”

Fist bump not gone? (Posted at 6:00pm)

Rest assured America, perhaps Barack Obama has not abandoned his signature fist bump.

It appears Tuesday’s pool report — widely reported by several media outlets, including CNN — that Obama refused to bump fists with a child in Ohio was incorrect.

A review of the tape shows the child was instead asking Obama to sign his hand, but the presumptive Democratic nominee declined.

“Rest assured” everyone. Order has once again been restored to the universe. The sun will rise in the morning, the birds will sing, and Obama and his wife will be bumping knuckles for all to see. Thank you CNN for covering the most important issue of the day. I can sleep easier knowing that things have been set right.

(If you are bored and want a good laugh, take a few minutes to read some of the comments left on the CNN site.)
